1 Check Refrigerant Charge via Subcooling
Trane CGAM scroll chillers use TXV-based refrigerant metering. Verify charge by measuring subcooling at the condenser outlet during stable operation (both circuits running, 80%+ load): target 12-18°F subcooling. If subcooling is <5°F, the system is undercharged — add refrigerant in 5-lb increments, allowing 15 minutes of stabilization between additions. If subcooling is >25°F, the system is overcharged — recover refrigerant until subcooling falls within range. An overcharge can cause LPC trips by flooding the evaporator and dropping suction pressure.
2 Inspect Liquid Line Filter Drier
A partially clogged filter drier creates a pressure drop that starves the TXV of liquid refrigerant, causing low suction pressure. Measure the temperature drop across the filter drier: more than 3°F temperature difference between inlet and outlet indicates a restriction. A restricted filter drier also typically shows frost or condensation on the outlet side. Replace the filter drier and perform a pressure test before recharging — a restricted drier often indicates system contamination that will re-clog a new drier within weeks.
3 Test TXV Operation & Sensing Bulb
The TXV modulates refrigerant flow based on suction superheat sensed at the bulb. Remove the TXV sensing bulb insulation and check: bulb must be tightly clamped to a clean, horizontal section of the suction line at the 4 or 8 o'clock position (never 12 or 6 o'clock). A loose bulb or a bulb mounted on a vertical pipe section will read incorrectly and cause the TXV to underfeed. Submerge the bulb in ice water — the TXV should close. Warm the bulb in your hand — the TXV should open. No response = failed TXV power head.
4 Verify Compressor Scroll Set Condition
Scroll compressors are remarkably durable but can experience internal wear that reduces pumping efficiency. With the circuit running at full load, measure the compressor's actual amp draw vs. the rated RLA on the nameplate. If the compressor is drawing <60% of RLA at full load, internal scroll wear or a broken Oldham coupling may be reducing compression ratio and causing low suction pressure. Perform a compressor pump-down test: close the discharge service valve and verify the compressor can pull suction pressure below 10 PSIG — inability to achieve deep vacuum confirms internal compressor wear.
