1 Check Outdoor Coil Condition & Airflow
City Multi outdoor units use microchannel aluminum coils with extremely tight fin spacing (1.2mm). These coils are efficient but clog easily — cottonwood, dust, and pollen can reduce airflow by 30-50% in a single season. Clean using a low-pressure (≤100 PSI) water spray with a commercial microchannel coil cleaner. Never use a pressure washer on microchannel coils — it will fold the fins flat and permanently destroy airflow. Also verify the outdoor unit has minimum clearance: 24" on service side, 12" on all other sides per Mitsubishi installation manual.
2 Verify Sub-Cooling Heat Exchanger (Sub-HE) Operation
Mitsubishi City Multi systems use a sub-cooling heat exchanger to improve efficiency. If the Sub-HE electronic expansion valve (LEV) is stuck closed, liquid refrigerant can't sub-cool, causing elevated discharge pressure. Access Maintenance Tool and check the Sub-HE LEV opening pulse count: should be 200-480 pulses during normal operation. Command the LEV full-open (2000 pulses) and full-closed (0 pulses) — listen for the valve stepping sound. No sound = stuck LEV = replace the outdoor unit LEV body.
3 Check Refrigerant Charge Using Maintenance Tool
VRF charge verification differs from conventional systems. Connect Maintenance Tool and navigate to 'Charge Check Mode.' The system will run all indoor units at full capacity and measure subcooler outlet temperature. Correct charge is confirmed when subcooler outlet SC = 15-25°F. If SC <10°F: undercharge. If SC >30°F: overcharge. Adjust charge in 2-lb increments and re-run Charge Check Mode after each adjustment — VRF systems are extremely sensitive to charge accuracy (±5% tolerance).
4 Inspect BC Controller Branch Circuit LEVs
If the 7100 error is accompanied by specific indoor units not cooling, a branch circuit LEV in the BC controller may be stuck closed, deadheading refrigerant flow and elevating system pressure. Identify the affected branch from the error log, then test the corresponding LEV using the Maintenance Tool's individual LEV test function. A stuck LEV can sometimes be freed by commanding full-open→full-close→full-open cycles 5-10 times ("exercising" the valve). If this doesn't restore operation, the BC controller branch LEV body requires replacement.
