Commercial Rooftop Units Warning (Economizer Locked Out)

Carrier WeatherExpert RTU Alarm A005: Economizer Actuator Feedback Error

Published: 2026-05-05

🔍 Symptoms Checklist

  • ⚠️ Economizer damper stays at minimum position (or fully closed)
  • ⚠️ Unit runs 100% mechanical cooling even when outdoor air is suitable for free cooling
  • ⚠️ i-Vu shows economizer actuator commanded position ≠ actual position
  • ⚠️ Energy consumption increases during cool weather — when economizer should be active

📋 Interactive Diagnostic Procedure

Click each step to expand detailed diagnostic instructions. Follow in sequence — each step builds on the previous one.

1 Verify Actuator Feedback Signal
The economizer actuator uses a 2-10V DC feedback signal to report actual damper position to the i-Vu controller. Measure the feedback voltage at the actuator terminals while commanding the damper through 0-100% range via the i-Vu service menu. Feedback should track command within 2% of full scale. A feedback signal stuck at 0V, 10V, or not changing with command indicates actuator potentiometer failure or a broken feedback gear inside the actuator.
2 Check Damper Linkage for Binding
A mechanically binding damper linkage causes the actuator to draw high current trying to reach commanded position, eventually tripping the actuator's internal overload. Disconnect the actuator from the damper shaft and manually rotate the damper blades through full range — they should move freely with less than 5 lb-in of torque. Stiff or binding dampers require lubrication of the blade bearings and linkage pivot points. Also check for debris or ice accumulation blocking damper travel.
3 Inspect Actuator Wiring & Connector Corrosion
The economizer actuator and its wiring connector are located in the outdoor air intake section of the RTU — exposed to rain, snow, and condensation. Inspect the actuator's Molex connector for green/white corrosion on the pins — this creates high-resistance connections that distort the 0-10V command and 2-10V feedback signals. Clean corroded pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and ensure the connector weather seal is intact.
