The 25-ton packaged rooftop unit is the workhorse of mid-size commercial buildings — retail, restaurants, and light industrial. Carrier's WeatherExpert series and Trane's IntelliPak series dominate this segment, and the choice between them has significant implications for installation cost, energy performance, and serviceability.

Control System

Carrier WeatherExpert: Uses the i-Vu Open controller with BACnet/IP as standard. The i-Vu platform is non-proprietary — third-party BAS integrators can access all control points without a Carrier license. Firmware updates are free and publicly available.

Trane IntelliPak: Uses the Symbio 800 controller with BACnet/IP and LonWorks options. The Symbio platform is powerful but more proprietary — advanced diagnostic functions require Trane's Tracer SC+ software (licensed, ~$1,200/year).

Trane IntelliPak: Uses staged scroll compressors (typically 4 compressors on a 25-ton unit). Each compressor is fixed-speed — modulation is achieved by cycling compressors in sequence. Part-load performance is inherently stepped rather than continuous.

Winner: Carrier WeatherExpert. Continuous digital modulation provides better temperature and humidity control, especially during part-load conditions that represent 70%+ of operating hours.

Economizer & Free Cooling

Carrier WeatherExpert: Factory-installed economizer with differential enthalpy control as standard on most models. The economizer logic compares outdoor air enthalpy to return air enthalpy — not just temperature — enabling free cooling during cool-but-humid conditions when temperature-based economizers would incorrectly use mechanical cooling.

Trane IntelliPak: Also offers factory-installed economizer with enthalpy control. Trane's design advantage: the economizer damper blade seals are more robust (triple-gasket vs double-gasket on Carrier), providing lower leakage rates (2-3% at 1" static vs 4-6% for Carrier).
